The author
Sendy is an Indonesian entrepreneur and lifelong learner whose studies have taken him through architecture, finance, technology and law. He graduated in architecture from Institut Teknologi Bandung and began his career in management consulting, then moved into financial services, where he founded two financial-technology start-ups in Jakarta.
During the COVID-19 pandemic he spent time in Bali, where he came to see the island as a living keeper of the Nusantara spirit inherited from the Majapahit era. There he began to think of Indonesia's intangible heritage not as something to preserve behind glass, but as something to evolve, grow and share.
He went on to lead digital products for an Indonesian financial-services group and later served as Chief Technology Officer of an Indonesian bank. He also holds a law degree from Universitas Indonesia. His interest lies in building businesses that do well and do good.
He chose the angklung because one instrument carries so much. It is a living Indonesian heritage, recognized by UNESCO in 2010. It is made of bamboo, a grass rather than a tree: cut a mature stem and the plant sends up new shoots. Its sound is physics a child can feel in the hand. And because each angklung plays a single note, a song exists only when every player comes in on time, so children learn music together with collaboration, timing, patience and focus, at an age when so much competes for their attention.
He lives in Jakarta with his family.
